The Last Dance marks Tom Hardy’s third and likely final turn as Venom. The franchise is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which is distinct from the Disney-led Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony has owned the rights to Spider-Man since 1999, keeping the MCU and Spider-Man apart until 2017, when Sony produced Spider-Man: Homecoming in association with Marvel Studios. Since then, Sony has worked with Marvel on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films and the Shameik Moore Spider-Verse franchise.
Venom: The Last Dance follows 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, in which Tom Hardy’s Venom tangles with Woody Harrelson’s Carnage. The first film in the franchise, 2018’s Venom kicked off the Sony Spider-Man Universe and stars Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed as the antagonist, Riot.

Sony’s Spider-Man movies have been notoriously hit-or-miss, with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 frequently cited as one of the best superhero movies of all time, while Madame Web managed to reach a new low-water mark set by Morbius.
Reception to Venom 3 was a mixed bag, with Rolling Stone’s David Fear writing “[Hardy is] the reason that you believe there is a bond between Brock and the unsolicited passenger riding shotgun in his body. And if fans have gravitated toward that one aspect, which is translated successfully from the comics, then they’ll probably be happy with the respectful conclusion to this trilogy. The Last Dance goes out with neither a bang nor a whimper, simply a farewell.”
Given the uneasy relationship between Marvel and Sony, streaming the Venom movies and Spider-Man movies is not quite so straightforward as it is with the MCU, which lives on Disney+. Currently, you can stream Venom on Disney+ and Venom 2 on Hulu with a Starz add-on. Because of a deal with Sony, Venom 3 will land exclusively on Netflix first.
