Never say never when it comes to pros returning to Dancing With the Stars. Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who left the show in 2017 after 17 seasons and one Mirrorball trophy win, recently suggested he might be open to returning to the competition for Season 33. But is that just wishful thinking or is Chmerkovskiy really coming back to Dancing With the Stars?

Is Maks Chmerkovskiy Coming Back to Dancing With the Stars?
Time has changed Chmerkovskiy’s feelings on a possible return to Dancing With the Stars. Until very recently, Chmerkovskiy had been on the record as saying he had no plans to return to the competition he won once, with Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis in Season 18.
In a July 2024 interview with Hello magazine, Chmerkovskiy, however, was much more open to a possible return, saying: “I mean, yeah. Why not? I would love to.”

That seems like a pretty easy and unequivocal yes. But Chmerkovskiy then clarified what he meant, explaining: “Not in the sense of like, “Would I love to do Dancing with the Stars.” I wouldn’t mind today because my mentality’s different, my body’s different, my feelings about everything sort of life are different, and the outlook on opportunities, possibilities, the reality, the things that make you happy.”
Which isn’t a no, it’s more of a conditional yes. One that comes from someone who understands what he’s getting into now.
Chmerkovskiy also added: “I’ve done so many things today by now that, again, I have data of like what’s best for me. What’s best for my family. What’s best for my psyche. What’s best for my heart, my soul, not just for my pocket. And so, from that standpoint, if the opportunity comes and it’s the right type of opportunity, and by that, I mean, there’s a reason and a need for me to be back, I would love the opportunity.”
A return to Dancing With the Stars would mean a reunion for Maksim Chmerkovskiy and his younger brother Valentin, who coincidentally won the last season of Dancing With the Stars alongside partner Xochitl Gomez.

Chmerkovskiy recently returned to the show in Season 32 for a tribute to the late judge Len Goodman. The dance, which was choreographed by Chmerkovskiy’s brother Val and sister-in-law Jenna Johnson, also featured returning former pros Tony Dovolani, Kym Johnson-Herjavec, Edyta ?liwińska, Karina Smirnoff, Anna Trebunskaya, Louis van Amstel, and Mark Ballas.
