This video of young girls talking about what 'She-Ra' means to them will get you excited for International Women's Day
At a time when there weren’t that many ass-kicking female characters in cartoons, She-Ra stood out in the ’80s. And now almost 35 years after the original series, the reboot She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is finding a new generation of fans thanks to 27-year-old creator and executive producer Noelle Stevenson, Netflix and DreamWorks.
Stevenson has brought together an all women writers’ room and a mostly female cast of characters. When was the last time you heard about an all-female writing team behind a hit animation series?
With its diverse cast and storytelling, it’s no surprise that the show is supporting #BalanceForBetter, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day that promotes gender equality.
The show released a special video (above) with messages from Stevenson and the voice cast about why She-Ra and the Princess of Power is important to them for IWD. Young girls also comment about why the characters have special meaning for them.
“I love Scorpia. She’s not afraid to show her inner feelings,” said one girl. Another girl shared, “I like how it’s not just boys being super strong.”
Stevenson said, “When I was a little girl, I always loved sci-fi and fantasy. I looked so hard for the female characters in those stories and so often they were very hard to find at all. Taking She-Ra and the Princesses of Power into today’s era was a dream project for me.” Her work has paid off. Since the reboot series premiered on Netflix in November, it was recently announced the second season will be released April 26, 2019.
The show has gotten plenty of love for their female characters but also for being one of TV’s most LGBTQ-inclusive and diverse shows. “It’s important to remind and show kids that no matter what you look like, yeah, there’s a place for every one of you,” said Lauren Ash (Superstore), voice of Scorpia.
