Vinnie Jones calls 'X-Men: The Last Stand' role 'one of the most disappointing jobs': 'Brett Ratner basically dissolved the character'
Vinnie Jones has said that working on X-Men: The Last Stand was one of the most disappointing moments of his acting career.
Jones played Cain Marko, a.k.a. Juggernaut, the hulking mutant criminal who is brought into Magneto's Brotherhood.
The former soccer star was brought on board by the film’s original director Matthew Vaughn — producer of the Jones-starring Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch — who had to quit the production due to personal issues.
But when Rush Hour helmsman Brett Ratner took over, Jones found his role had been decimated, and he'd been reduced to the role of “an extra.”
He told ComicBookMovie.com: “I basically got mugged off. Matthew Vaughn signed me up, and it was a great role and a great script, and Juggernaut was a great character. I signed up for three of them, and that will show you how serious I was about it.
“Brett Ratner basically dissolved the character. I was in my f***ing trailer half the time. It's one of the most disappointing jobs I've been on as far as, you know, 'What am I doing here?'”
Not only was the role diminished, but Jones had to sit in the makeup chair for four hours each day to have his muscle suit and prosthetic chin fitted.
He went on: “It wasn't the same Juggernaut as I signed on for. They took his storyline away, they'd taken his character away, his dialogue. I had two big meetings with Brett about it, and he said, 'Yeah, yeah, it's coming. They're writing stuff for you as we speak' and it never f***ing happened.
“Disappointment-wise, that was probably one of the biggest. What's upsetting is some of the fans blame me! It was f***ing nothing to do with me! That role, I didn't sign up for. The Juggernaut you saw was not the Juggernaut I signed on for with Matthew Vaughn, I'll tell you that now. It upset me.”
Jones said that he'd love the opportunity to “put it right,” though that ship may have sailed.
The character of Juggernaut has subsequently reappeared in the Marvel universe, in Deadpool 2. In that film, the character was rendered in VFX instead, with Ryan Reynolds providing the voice performance.
