VMAs Make Major Change for Presidential Debate
While a room full of pop stars like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande is pretty hard to upstage, your favorite musicians are being sidelined two of the most famous people in the world: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (or VMAs) were originally slated to air on Sept. 10, 2024, but have been pushed back to Sept. 11 due to the presidential debate between Harris and Trump.
The 2024 VMAs are sure to be a star studded affair. The first set of performers, including Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello and Chappell Roan, have been announced and the nominees include Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Eminem, SZA and Megan Thee Stallion.

Over the last month, with Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race and Kamala Harris replacing him on the Democratic ticket, the debate schedule was in flux. At various points a debate between Harris and Trump seemed uncertain, but the pair finally agreed to a debate airing on ABC on the evening of Sept. 10 to be moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis.
Since the first presidential debate between Harris and Trump is likely to draw a massive audience, MTV elected to move their awards show, pushing it back by a day. With this new time slot, the VMA won't air at the same time as the highly anticipated presidential debate.
The VMAs will air on MTV on Sept. 11, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET and will stream simultaneously on Paramount+.
