'The Voice': Blake Shelton disses Kelly Clarkson's 'American Idol' run, jokes she's a 'terrible coach'

Kelly Clarkson has an upper hand on "The Voice."

Not only has she won the NBC singing competition three times as a coach, Clarkson has the unique insight from a contestant's standpoint as the inaugural winner of Fox's "American Idol" in 2002, host Carson Daly pointed out Tuesday during the fourth night of blind auditions.

"She’s won a show just like this," Daly told Blake Shelton, Nick Jonas and John Legend. "Arguably she knows more about this than any of you."

Shelton, who has served as a "Voice" coach for a decade, wasn't impressed because he said "that show is canceled." ("American Idol" was revived by ABC in 2018.) The country crooner playfully added that Clarkson "can't complete her team" and is a "terrible coach."

Some contestants, however, felt differently.

Clarkson successfully lured 17-year-old contestant Gihanna Zoe, who earned two chair turns with her rendition of "She Used to Be Mine" by Sara Bareilles, away from Jonas with her hefty resume.

"I’ve obviously navigated a singing competition myself before as well so I do think there’s some strategy to it," Clarkson said. "I feel like we would be a good fit together. That’s why I turned around. I was really impressed by you."

And it worked. Zoe joined Team Clarkson.

But her go-to pitch started to lose its effectiveness.

Deion Warren earned three chair turns from Clarkson, Jonas and Legend for his powerful performance of Lady Gaga's "Shallow."

"Pick, I don’t know, someone who has won a vocal competition," Clarkson said. Jonas interrupted, "Or (pick) someone who hasn’t (won) and has a lot to prove."

Although there's no love lost between the coaches, they remained loyal to their network.

When contestant JD Casper pointed out that his blind audition song, "How to Save a Life" by The Fray, was featured on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," the coaches had an interesting reaction.

"I didn’t watch that show. I mean sorry 'Grey's Anatomy,'" Clarkson said. Legend added: "It was on another network. We don’t watch that network." Sorry, Shonda Rhimes.
