Vote for 2017's Saddest Breakup
It’s time for the Yahooies, our third annual reader-voted awards honoring the best — and sometimes worst — of the year. Each day through Dec. 8, we will announce the nominees for one category, with an accompanying poll. The winners will be crowned Monday, Dec. 11.
The nominees for 2017’s Saddest Breakup are…
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt
This one was both surprising and gutting. In August, Pratt and Faris announced they were separating after eight years of marriage. In a joint statement, the couple said they were “disappointed” because they “tried hard for a long time” to save their relationship. Although Faris has already moved on romantically, they have vowed to remain friends because they have one (insanely adorable) child together, their 5-year-old son, Jack. —Taryn Ryder
Fergie and Josh Duhamel
After eight years of marriage and one son (Axl, 4), the pretty pair called it quits in February — and managed to keep it quiet until September. They tried to make it work, but even couple’s therapy couldn’t save their union, which reportedly broke down over differing lifestyles as she worked on her first album in 11 years and he wanted a more “traditional” existence in line with his North Dakota upbringing. While neither wanted a divorce, separate lives do not a couple make. —Carly Milne
Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga
While there were red flags (largely their nine-year engagement with no firm plans to say “I do”), we were rooting for this duo because their little family, including 8-year-old son David Jr., “saved” the songstress after the horrific murders of her mother, brother, and nephew just months into their romance. Their uncoupling, which occurred in November, has been especially messy (she claims he taunted her with a gun), involving a protective order and a custody battle. It’s all sadder than one of her heartbreak songs. —Suzy Byrne
Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller
Together for 18 years, they were the kind of long-term couple that proved Hollywood love stories could really happen … at least until they split in May. Part of the sadness about their breakup was undoubtedly because the two of them together gave us so many laughs, as they famously starred alongside each other in Zoolander (she was the “investigatory journalist”), Dodgeball, and other comedies. At least the split was amicable, leaving the possibility of more to come. —Raechal Leone Shewfelt

Black Sabbath
How can you not shed a tear knowing we’ll never hear Ozzy Osbourne tear into “Iron Man” or Tony Iommi shred through “Paranoid” after the iconic metalheads called it quits following their swan-song February concert in their U.K. hometown of Birmingham? As bassist-lyricist Geezer Butler said, it was “quite sad … to think that we’d never do it again.” Thank goodness we’ll always have “War Pigs.” — Marcus Errico
