Wait for it: Hilary Duff to star in 'How I Met Your Father,' Hulu's spin-off of hit comedy

Kids, it's time to tell you another how we met story.

The world of "How I Met Your Mother" will continue on Hulu with "How I Met Your Father," a sequel to the original CBS comedy that will star Hilary Duff. The streaming service on Wednesday announced the long-rumored new series, on which Duff serves as both producer and star.

Set in New York City, just like the original, "Father" will follow Duff's Sophie, who in the near future is telling her son the long story of how she met his father. That story will "catapult us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options," the announcement says.

The series is created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (“This Is Us,” “Love, Victor”); “Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will executive produce alongside them.

In a statement, Bays and Thomas said they "now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of ‘How I Met Your Father.’ We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the ‘HIMYM’ fans out there who waited for it.)"

“As a huge fan of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby," Duff added in a news release.

This is not the first attempt to spin a series off from "Mother," which ran on CBS from 2005 to 2014. A pilot episode for a spin-off called "How I Met Your Dad," starring actress and director Greta Gerwig, was made in 2014 but CBS passed on a series.
