Watch Bernie Sanders's Eccentric Comedy Film Debut From 1999
Hot on the heels of his virtual tie in the Iowa caucuses, an unusual video of Sen. Bernie Sanders has resurfaced and been making the rounds online. It’s his big break in movies, comin’ atcha from 1999. Bernie was featured in the low-budget comedy My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception, in which he played “Rabbi Manny Shevitz.”
According to IMDb, the film is set at an offbeat Italian-Jewish wedding where “the bride’s ex-boyfriend is a member of the band, a collection of musical misfits.” The movie also features late-’90s musical icon Vitamin C and singer-songwriter Debbie Gibson.
The director’s era-appropriate website teases his “eclectic upbringing … in Vermont,” so maybe Vermonters just call in favors for one another from time to time? We’d believe it.
Now, of course, this isn’t the first time a politician has popped up unexpectedly in a movie. Sen. Patrick Leahy, a huge Batman fan, has been in three Batman flicks and he’s set to return in Batman v. Superman. So come on, Bernie: We’re expecting another cameo in something. Deadpool, maybe? Bring Rabbi Shevitz into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at last!
