For many of hip-hop’s finest, Tupac Shakur was a beloved rapper. While on the red carpet at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards last month, fan favorites including Chance The Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign, Fabolous, Jidenna among others offered their praise to the iconic lyricist, who passed away at the age of 25 in Las Vegas 20 years ago almost a week after he was shot.
Ty Dolla $ign called ‘Pac his “favorite MC ever,” adding, “His lyrics got me through my parents’ divorce.” Coloring Book maestro Chance also highlighted the gangster poet’s personality and abilities. “I see him as a great man, an outspoken man and a truth-teller,” he offered.

Jidenna, who has taken political stances in his own music like ‘Pac, also saluted the West Coast wordsmith for being unapologetically himself. “Tupac Shakur was not afraid to say what he wanted to say,” he said. “I do think that we have artists in our generation like Kanye West. They don’t wear a mask like most of us on this carpet, including myself. I’m still learning as a rookie, how to be as honest and passinate as Tupac Shakur.”
Fabolous also noted the lesson he learned from Shakur. “Tupac’s legacy is one that’s taught me, as an artist, how much power we have.”
