Chappell Roan turning the VMAs 2024 stage into a battlefield? It's a femininomenon. Dressed in full Joan of Arc regalia, Roan took to the stage with a little bit of everything: flaming arrows, swords, and a burning castle in the background. And the mic was ON.
Marking her award show debut in style — clad in body armor and some Dr. Martens Anistone Hi Leather Biker Boots — Roan performed her hit record “Good Luck, Babe!” and showed the world why her name is on everyone's lips this year.
The star, who wore a 600-year-old robe on the red carpet, arrived to the VMAs teasing this performance with a knightly entrance, complete with a medieval rug and another sword. Roan's fiery spirit was on full display on the red carpet as well, after the singer clapped back at a photographer who was being rude to her.
Roan is one of many first-time VMAs nominees at the 2024 ceremony, with nods for Best New Artist and PUSH: Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova.” This is likely the start to an eventful awards season for the musician, who is already projected to nab at least one Grammy nomination.
Just before the VMAs, Roan celebrated another milestone: her first Rolling Stone magazine cover, where she got candid about the struggles of meteoric fame, the female artists who have supported her behind the scenes, and even some new music on the horizon.
“It is the storyline of a girl who moved from a small conservative town to a city and had an awakening of this world she never knew existed,” Kayleigh says.
She and collaborator Dan Nigro have five or six new songs already recorded, and she'll have some time off from November to May solely to write. “We have a country song. We have a dancy song. We have one that’s really Eighties, and we have one that’s acoustic, and we have one that’s really organic, live-band, Seventies vibe. It’s super weird,” she said.
She's been performing the new and unreleased song “Subway” at various festivals, but she told Rolling Stone that one isn't her next drop. “I just like performing it," Roan told the outlet. “I have two others that I really want to perform, too, [but] I don’t know what’s next. When I don’t know, it just hasn’t hit me yet because usually I know. I always have an answer. I don’t think it’s ‘Subway.' … [The next single] needs to have more grit, whether that means more pop grit or rock grit or just bite to the lyrics.”
