The death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and the almost wilful misinterpretation of his final words by his wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke) brought us to the precipice of war at the end of Season 1. Eve Best and Steve Toussaint returned as Princes Rhaenys and Lord Corlys Velaryon respectively, wedding their forces to Rhaenyra’s against King Aegon II, Team Green’s usurper of the Iron Throne, magnificently played by Tom Glynn-Carney. Season 2 also welcomed new actors like Clinton Liberty in the role of Addam of Hull, and Freddie Fox as Alicent Hightower’s brother Ser Gwayne.
Martin’s Fire & Blood is thrillingly realized here; an improvement, even, on the show’s debut. Tempestuous dragons reign fire down on their foes, and conflicts like The Battle of Rook’s Rest deliver scenes of spectacular carnage, with the Chicago Sun-Times' critic Richard Roeper calling the follow-up “a visually glorious epic that once again feels like appointment TV.”
Season 3 has been greenlit, but it will likely be another two years (!) before the next chapter of the “Dance of the Dragons” begins.
