Watch Keanu Reeves announce Bill and Ted's next excellent adventure: A 2020 sequel
They started their excellent adventure by traveling back in time. Now Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are landing in 2020. The stars of the sci-fi comedies Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991) announced today that the totally long-awaited third Bill and Ted film is officially in production. Bill and Ted 3: Face the Music is slated for release next spring, 31 years after the first film opened in theaters. Watch the original Wyld Stallyns share the good news in the video above.
“We want to say thank you to you, the fans,” Reeves, who plays Theodore “Ted” Logan, tells the camera, before announcing with Winters that they’ll begin production on Bill and Ted 3 this summer.
“It is all because of you guys, so we owe you a huge debt of gratitude,” adds Winter, who plays William “Bill” S. Preston. “And we wanted to say thank you, and be excellent.”
According to a press release, Face the Music involves “a visitor from the future” telling the middle-aged friends that “only their song can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe.” Thus begins Bill and Ted’s third journey, in which the slacker musicians “will be helped by their families, old friends and a few music legends.”
The original Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure opened in 1989 with an unforgettable tagline: “History is about to be rewritten by two guys who can’t spell.” The low-budget film, which co-starred George Carlin, was a surprise blockbuster that put Reeves on the path to stardom. He and Winter returned for a less-profitable sequel, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, and voiced their characters in a 1990 cartoon based on the film. Nostalgic fans have been petitioning for a new Bill and Ted film ever since. Finally, their kids will get a chance to learn the word “bodacious.”
The Wyld Stallyns will ride into the theaters on April 21, 2020.
