Watch: Mick Fleetwood Surprises Maui Hotel Guests With Impromptu Lobby Bar Performance

A casual Thursday night for guests at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua turned into a once-in-a-lifetime moment they won’t soon forget, as Mick Fleetwood took over the hotel lobby bar for an impromptu performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”

The musician — and longtime Maui resident — was among a small group of guests who had gathered at the hotel bar to watch American Idol finalist Oliver Steele perform. Part of the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s weekly musical offerings, Steele was playing the second of two nights at the luxury property, and was finishing his set when he spotted the music legend in the audience. “You are one of my biggest inspirations,” the visibly emotional Steele said. “I hope you don’t mind if I play one more song.”

As the supportive crowd chanted for a hana hou, the Hawaiian phrase used to encourage an encore at concerts, Steele began playing the familiar opening refrain to “Landslide.” It was enough to get Fleetwood up from his seat, as he approached the stage and whispered something into Steele’s ear. A few minutes later, the legendary artist had returned to the room with his talking drum in tow, gesturing for Steele to begin the song.

Joined by an acoustic guitarist, a ukulele player, and now a music icon on percussion, Steele delivered a soulful rendition of “Landslide” in front of an enraptured audience at the Ritz, who couldn’t quite believe what they were witnessing. “Somebody please tell me they took video of this,” Steele exclaimed as the song was ending.

While the American Idol star was in town to perform for Ritz-Carlton guests, Fleetwood was helping to promote the Hua Momona Foundation’s inaugural Maui Music & Food Experience. Taking place September 5-7, the benefit event brings together local musicians and chefs to raise funds for survivors of the August 2023 Lahaina fire.

For Fleetwood, who lost his namesake restaurant in the fires, the event is a chance to celebrate the resilience of Maui, but to also remind people of the continued need for funding and support, amidst the ongoing rebuilding efforts in the community. “We don’t want people to forget about the fires,” he tells Rolling Stone.

The Fleetwood Mac legend will be performing as part of the charity event, joined by an eclectic musical lineup that includes Billy Cox (founding member of Band of Gypsys and who played on Maui with Jimi Hendrix), Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers, and Daryl Jones from the Rolling Stones.

The celebrity chefs joining the event include Gordon Ramsay’s Next Level Chef contestants Zach Laidlaw, Ryan Von Smith, Gabi Chappel, and Christina Miros.
