Ready to watch a live-action Monkey D. Luffy assemble his ragtag pirate crew? (Netflix/Yahoo Entertainment)

Anime fans, are you ready for Netflix’s newest adaptation? One Piece, the long-running fan-favorite anime series that has spawned 15 animated movies and 40 video games, has been transformed into a live-action series — and the new show, which has been seven years in the making, drops today. For the uninitiated, One Piece takes place on an alternate version of Earth during the “Golden Age of Pirates.” The show follows Monkey D. Luffy, a bendy young boy with big dreams to become the Pirate King. All he needs is a crew to help him find the treasure of infamous pirate Gold Roger’s, aka the One Piece.

The new Netflix adaptation stars I?aki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero and Taz Skylar. For those nervous about Netflix’s ability to adapt such a beloved anime (especially after the streamer’s Cowboy Bebop misfire), Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the original One Piece manga series and subsequent anime, has some reassuring words for you:

“There were no compromises on this show!” the best-selling author declared in a letter to fans.
