What to watch this weekend February 16, 2024: TV awards contenders

You know what they say: Time flies when you’re trying to solve a supernatural-tinged murder mystery in perpetual darkness while simultaneously struggling with the unbearable weight of personal trauma. Or, something like that.

As unbelievable as it may seem, we’ve reached the end of the road with “True Detective: Night Country.” The show, which comes to a close Sunday at 9/8c, successfully revived the flagging HBO anthology by turning the concept on its head (and seemingly taking a few cues from fellow HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown”). In the finale, “Part 6,” a brutal winter storm forces Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Navarro (Kali Reis) to shelter at the Tsalal research station, where they begin to piece together what happened to Annie and to the scientists, all while facing down their own personal demons. A riveting hour, and an emotionally satisfying conclusion to what has been one of the brightest (heh) spots in TV this year, “True Detective: Night Country” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you simply can’t stand another minute in the dark, other contenders include:

  • “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”: Now a 28-time Emmy winner, HBO’s popular late night series will be back on your TV screens this weekend. Entering its 11th season, “Last Week Tonight” could not be returning at a better time, as we are in desperate need of someone to explain what the hell is going on at “The Daily Show.” The season premiere airs Sunday at 11/10c on HBO and Max.

  • “The New Look”: Emmy winner Ben Mendelsohn leads this thoughtful new period drama about fashion designer Christian Dior. Set in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II, the series tells the story of how Dior, along with fellow designers Coco Chanel, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Pierre Balmain, sowed the seeds of modern fashion while facing down the horrors of war. Oscar winner Juliette Binoche portrays Chanel, while two-time Emmy nominee Maisie Williams appears as Christian’s sister, Catherine, who became a French Resistance fighter. The first three episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+.

  • “Ghosts”: Over on broadcast, CBS’s best (only?) show about ghost shenanigans returned for its highly anticipated third season this week. In “The Owl,” Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) learn who passed into the afterlife in the Season 2 finale (also known as being “sucked off” — and no, we are not joking). The episode is now streaming on Paramount+.
