What to watch this weekend March 29, 2024: TV awards contenders
When you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, don’t immediately dismiss Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” as just another prestige limited series about the Holocaust. It’s that, of course, but it’s also so much more.
Emmy nominee Joey King stars opposite Logan Lerman in this powerful adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s bestselling novel, which tells the story of the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, and their attempts to reunite. The eight-episode limited series, the first three episodes of which are now streaming on Hulu, stands out amongst similarly themed projects for the way it expands the scope of the narrative. Set in multiple countries and told over a number of years, “We Were the Lucky Ones” reaches beyond the well-known horrors of the concentration camps with which we’re all painfully familiar to portray the varied experiences of those who lived through the war, ultimately reminding us of the power of the human spirit. Far from bleak, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you’d like to dig your teeth into something different, other contenders include:
“A Gentleman in Moscow”: Married couple Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead star in this eight-episode adaptation of Amor Towles’ 2016 novel of the same name, which follows a Russian aristocrat (McGregor) serving a lifetime sentence under house arrest in a luxury hotel after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The series premiere is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime, but will air linearly Sunday at 9/8c on Showtime.
“STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces”: Morgan Neville’s documentary about legendary comedian and Emmy winner Steve Martin examines the performer’s life from two points of view. The first so-called episode, “Then,” clocks in at 98 minutes and centers on Martin’s impressive stand-up career, from which he walked away in his mid-30s, while the second episode, titled “Now,” spends 95 minutes chronicling Martin’s post-stand-up life and the transformation that happened. The two halves are distinct in approach and tone, but as a whole make for one of the most compelling documentaries we’ve seen in a while. Both “episodes” are now streaming on Apple TV+.
“Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show”: No, we didn’t forget to delete placeholder text — ”Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” is the comedian’s new series in which he bares his soul after coming out in the Emmy-winning comedy special “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.” The eight-episode docuseries, which was filmed over 2022 and 2023, offers viewers a frank look at Carmichael, his life, and his relationships in the wake of that monumental moment. The first episode airs Friday at 11/10c on HBO and Max.
