What to watch this weekend Nov. 22, 2024: TV awards contenders
It’s a match made in heaven the good place.
Emmy winner Ted Danson reunites with creator Mike Schur for “A Man on the Inside,” a new Netflix comedy about a retired engineering professor who, with a little prodding from his daughter (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) to start living his life again following the death of his wife, goes undercover at a posh retirement home after answering a classified ad. Across eight episodes (all streaming now), Charles attempts to discover what happened to a cherished family heirloom; what he finds instead is a new lease on life, as he quickly endears himself to everyone around him, from his fellow residents to the retirement home’s congenial staff.

Inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Mole Agent,” the series joins critically acclaimed comedies like “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” in putting seniors at the forefront of their stories, reminding us that life doesn’t stop at 40. Part mystery, part comedy, part heartfelt missive on human connection, “A Man on the Inside” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, it’s not the only way to pass the time indoors as the temperatures drop. Other contenders include:
“Interior Chinatown”: Jimmy O. Yang, Ronny Chieng, and Chloe Bennet star in this new limited series from Charles Yu. Based on his award-winning book of the same name and executive-produced by Oscar winner Taika Waititi, the show is set within the backdrop of a standard police procedural and tackles Asian-American stereotypes and familiar TV tropes as it follows Willis Wu (Yang), an unassuming waiter in Chinatown, as he goes through the motions of a background character. When he witnesses the abduction of a nail salon technician, it’s just the type of event that could finally put him in the spotlight. Ambitious and inherently bingeable, it’s a fun addition to the current TV landscape. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
“Leonardo da Vinci”: You may think you know about Leonardo da Vinci, the famed Italian polymath (aka someone whose knowledge and expertise spans a wide range of topics), but Emmy-winning documentarian Ken Burns and his co-directors, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, are about to show you that you likely know quite little. Pulling from primary and secondhand accounts of da Vinci’s life, as well as the man’s own notebooks, this new two-part, four-hour documentary is a fascinating, intimate portrait of one of history’s great intellects. Both parts are now streaming on PBS.
“Outlander”: It’s been more than a year since Starz’s popular romantic fantasy series aired the first half of its seventh season. The remaining episodes find Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) back where it all began, in 18th century Scotland, which means fans can expect to see some familiar faces for the first time in a long time. The season premiere is now streaming, but it airs linearly Friday at 8/7c on Starz.
