What to watch this weekend October 11, 2024: TV awards contenders
School is finally back in session! ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy “Abbott Elementary” returned for its fourth season this week, and even though we’re getting a full 22 episodes once more, the show thankfully didn’t wait too long to confirm the state of TV’s cutest union. In the premiere, which is now streaming on Hulu, Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) relationship takes center stage, and while it’s clear the two still have some things to figure out, the change in their romantic status leads Ava (Janelle James) to call in a district HR rep to ensure that everything is above board. Meanwhile, the construction of a nearby golf course leads to some interesting changes for the school and our favorite teachers. As charming and funny as ever, “Abbott Elementary” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, it’s not the only show worth checking out this week. Other contenders include:
“Slow Horses”: One of TV’s best dramas wraps its own fourth season this week with an episode that is equal parts thrilling and devastating. In “Hello Goodbye,” River (Jack Lowden) finally comes face to face with the heartless Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), and learns more about himself in the process, while the rest of the team faces off against one of Frank’s skilled assassins in their own house. Emotionally affecting and appropriately tense, the must-see outing caps off another award-worthy adventure for the Emmy-winning spy series. The episode is now streaming on Apple TV+.
“Starting 5”: Netflix’s ongoing love affair with unscripted sports series taking fans behind the action continues with this intimate look at some of the NBA’s biggest stars. Following LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum throughout the 2023-24 season, the series doesn’t just cover what happens on the court, but what happens in the moments in between games as well. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
“Disclaimer”: Oscar-winning writer and director Alfonso Cuarón declaring this psychological thriller starring Cate Blanchett a seven-hour movie should probably disqualify it from TV awards contention, but that is not how this works. Based on Renée Knight’s novel of the same name, the limited series follows Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), a respected journalist known for uncovering the misdeeds of others who suddenly finds herself the main character in a novel that reveals her own dark secrets that she’d prefer to keep buried. The first two episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+.
