What to watch this weekend October 27, 2023: TV awards contenders

Questions are finally answered, but even more are raised in “Loki’s” pivotal fourth episode, “Heart of the TVA,” which is now streaming on Disney+. 

The fate of the Time Variance Authority hangs in the balance in the altogether shocking hour, which sees Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) continue to sow chaos wherever she goes. Meanwhile, Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) meets his hero, O.B. (Ke Huy Quan), but the duo’s respective fangirling over one another is ultimately cut short by the problem at hand: The Temporal Loom is becoming more and more overwhelmed by the branching timelines. Can they figure out how to rectify it before everyone dies? The thrilling outing is a turning point for the Marvel series and will have massive consequences for our (anti)heroes moving forward, ultimately making “Loki” the awards contender to watch this weekend.

But if you’re looking for something a little less timey-wimey, other contenders to watch include: 

  • “Billions”: The time has finally come to say goodbye to Axe (Emmy winner Damian Lewis), Chuck (Emmy winner Paul Giamatti) and the rest of the “Billions” crew as the popular Showtime drama rides off into the proverbial sunset after seven seasons. The series finale, titled “Admirals Fund,” is a worthwhile conclusion as Axe and Chuck’s plan to take down new presidential candidate Prince (Corey Stoll) is put into motion while the latter is at Camp David. The episode is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime and will air Sunday at 8/7c on Showtime.

  • “The Gilded Age”: They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. After waiting nearly two years for the return of Julian Fellowes’ historical soap opera, our hearts are just about as fond as they can possibly get. In its sophomore outing, the Emmy winner for production design fully embraces its most dramatic tendencies while investigating ridiculous Rich People Problems and, in turn, becomes a wholly entertaining romp. The Season 2 premiere airs Sunday at 9/8c on HBO and Max.

  • “Our Flag Means Death”: A wedding, a funeral, a sweet reunion and a necessary bit of violence come together to form a surprisingly emotional farewell to Max’s excellent high seas comedy. Whether or not the Season 2 finale will ultimately be the last we see of the Revenge crew is yet to be determined. But if “Mermen” turns out to be all there is, “Our Flag Means Death” is, without a doubt, the best gay pirate comedy we’ve ever seen. The season finale is now streaming on Max.
