What to watch this weekend October 6, 2023: TV awards contenders
Few things in life are as enticing as Tom Hiddleston in a suit, so for some viewers, that might be reason enough to check out the second season of Marvel’s time-traveling series “Loki,” which returned this week and finds the God of Mischief teaming up with Mobius (Owen Wilson) and B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) to save the TVA after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the end of the first season. But we can give you a few more reasons to check out the exciting Season 2 premiere, which is now streaming on Disney+.
First, the addition of Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan as a scene-stealing tech guru allows the show to explore more of the secretive TVA while reminding us just how wonderful it is to see him in front of the camera again. Additionally, the intriguing production design of Kasra Farahani and striking score of Natalie Holt continue to set the show apart from the rest of the TV landscape. Both earned Emmy nominations for their work on the first season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them in the conversation yet again.

However, if the exploits of the MCU isn’t your thing, other contenders to watch include:
“Beckham”: Although Netflix’s new four-part docuseries chronicling the career of David Beckham does not mention the 2002 film “Bend It Like Beckham,” it does offer viewers an in-depth look at the English football star from the early days of his career in the 1990s with Manchester United to his retirement while playing for Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, with stops in Madrid and Los Angeles in between. Directed by Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens, and making great use of old footage from on and off the pitch, the doc features interviews with Beckham, his wife Victoria, his parents, and many of his former coaches and teammates to paint a rounded portrait of the once-in-a-generation star. This isn’t a doc that’s going to make shocking revelations, but for sports fans, it’s a treat. All four episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
“Our Flag Means Death”: Max’s charming, fan-favorite comedy about the world’s most emotional and unconventional pirates is back for another voyage aboard the Revenge. While the first season introduced fans to several surprising romances, including one between Gentleman Pirate Stede (Rhys Darby) and the infamous Captain Blackbeard (executive producer Taika Waititi), those relationships are now experiencing growing pains, spawning plenty of interpersonal drama on the high seas. The first three episodes are now streaming on Max.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers”: The end of the Writers Guild of America strike means the return of our favorite late-night shows. On Monday, Meyers and the show’s Emmy-nominated writing staff returned to work with a full hour of “A Closer Look,” which covered major developments from the last five months as well as the day’s news. The episode is now streaming on Peacock.
