What to watch this weekend September 27, 2024: Movie awards contenders

Generate Key Takeaways

Our top pick this week, “Inside Out 2,” is a shoo-in for a Best Animated Feature nomination, though it will face some stiff competition for the actual trophy from “The Wild Robot.” Pixar’s film does have the advantage of being the highest-grossing movie of the year and the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The box office doesn’t necessarily equal quality, but it does equal people actually seeing the movie, which is most of the battle.

The sequel to 2015’s Best Animated Feature winner is set inside the mind of Riley, who was 11 in the first movie and is now 13, which means she’s having some feelings she’s never felt before. This means Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) and her fellow emotions have to deal with the arrival of these personified new emotions, which are led by Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke). Will Anxiety take over and leave no room for Joy, or will the emotions learn how to work together? Find out on Disney+ now.

Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

Apartment 7A”: Multiple Emmy winner Julia Garner (“Ozark”) stars in this straight-to-streaming film prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby.” In this psychological thriller, Garner plays a dancer who rents a room from a seemingly nice older couple (Oscar winner Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally) in 1965 New York, but things get really strange. It’s now streaming on Paramount+.

Will & Harper”: This heartwarming, funny, and quietly profound documentary chronicles a road trip taken by Will Ferrell and former “SNL” head writer Harper Steele after Steele comes out as a trans woman. They’ve been friends for almost 30 years, but Ferrell in particular isn’t sure how to navigate this change, so they travel the country together, having deep conversations and interacting with ordinary Americans. It’s now on Netflix.

Wolfs”: Brad Pitt and George Clooney reunite for this action comedy as two Ray Donovans who get hired to work on the same job making a problem for a wealthy client go away. They both prefer to work alone, but they have to figure out how to work together. Their survival depends on it. Jon Watts, best known for the MCU “Spider-Man” films, writes and directs. Though it was originally slated for a wide theatrical release, it’s now for all intents and purposes a direct-to-Apple TV+ film.
