What to watch this weekend September 6, 2024: TV awards contenders
Saddle up, y’all, Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” is finally back in action.
After earning nine Emmy nominations for its excellent third season, including one for Best Drama Series and acting bids for Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce, the darkly comedic espionage thriller about MI5’s worst spies returns this week with its most personal outing yet.

In the new season, the first episode of which is now streaming, River (Lowden) finds himself caught in the crosshairs after his grandfather (Pryce), a former high-ranking member of the intelligence service who is now in the early stages of dementia, is attacked by an assailant impersonating River. As the younger Cartwright and the rest of Slough House attempt to get to the bottom of this latest mess, numerous personal and professional secrets are revealed that threaten not just our beloved, screwed-up heroes, but the whole of MI5 as well. It’s another stellar outing from what has become one of TV’s most dependable shows, and by significantly raising the emotional stakes “Slow Horses” has secured its place amongst TV’s best, making it the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, it’s not the only show worth talking about this week. Other contenders include:
“English Teacher”: Emmy voters should make room on their ballots next year for two workplace comedies pointedly exploring America’s education system. Creator Brian Jordan Alvarez stars in this new FX series that investigates the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school in Austin, Texas, in 2024. Enrico Colantoni, Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Jordan Firstman and Langston Kerman also star. The first two episodes are now streaming on Hulu.
“The Perfect Couple”: The Nicole Kidman Beach Read TV Universe expands again this week with the addition of this new limited series set on the idyllic island of Nantucket. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand, the series stars Kidman as a wealthy novelist whose son is set to be married in the event of the summer until the body of one of the guests washes ashore and everyone becomes a suspect. The show is a frothy mystery that examines marriage, fidelity and the lies we tell one other, but it’s also a showcase for great character names, from Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman) and Merritt Monaco (Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy) to Shooter Dival (Ishaan Khattar). The series’ large ensemble cast also features Liev Schrieber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Donna Lynne Champlin and Billy Howle. All six episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
“Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos”: From Emmy- and Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney, this two-part doc is must-see TV for fans of “The Sopranos,” as it dives deep into not only Chase’s life and career but also the run of the critically acclaimed HBO drama. Series stars Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco, Steven Van Zandt and Drea de Matteo appear in new interviews alongside a number of the show’s writers and producers, including Terence Winter, while late series star James Gandolfini appears via archival footage. Both parts air Saturday at 8/7c on HBO and Max.
