What to watch this weekend September 8, 2023: TV awards contenders

It’s all about beginnings and endings in the Season 2 finale of “Minx.” The 1970s-set comedy from Ellen Rapoport starring Ophelia Lovibond as the idealistic editor of a popular women’s magazine ends its triumphant sophomore outing with an episode that attempts to reset the status quo.

After a season that saw the titular magazine become an international sensation at the cost of its employees’ happiness, the finale (now streaming on Starz) sees Joyce (Lovibond), who spent most of the eight-episode season buying into her own manufactured hype, finally take action against the demanding and opinionated Constance (Emmy nominee Elizabeth Perkins), the wealthy widow who came on board to finance the magazine. Unfortunately for Joyce and the rest of the staff, Constance has also made Doug (fan favorite Jake Johnson) an offer he can’t refuse, sparking interpersonal drama and setting the show up for a dramatic third season (should Starz renew it), thus making the show the awards contender to watch this weekend.

But if you’re looking for something a little less “burn it all down,” other contenders include:

  • “The Masked Singer”: The Emmy-winning reality series returns yet again to ask if the general viewing public is able to identify (mostly random) celebrities by little more than their singing voice. And you might be asking yourself, “How are we still doing this in 2023?” And the answer is that we’ve got a never-ending supply of celebs and nothing but time. Season 10 premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT (or whenever NFL coverage is over).

  • “Star Trek: Lower Decks”: Embarking on its fourth season, this animated Paramount+ comedy featuring the voices of Jack Quaid, No?l Wells, Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero and Dawnn Lewis is a bright spot in the always expanding “Star Trek” universe. While the live-action shows tend to be more dramatic in tone, “Lower Decks,” which follows several low-ranking crew members, finds humor in poking fun at the very things it engages in, making it a much-needed addition to the franchise. The first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.

  • “I Am Groot”: The cutest thing to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (sorry, Tom Hiddleston) returns for more mischief in a new season of animated shorts. If you’re pressed for time (or just looking for a quick dopamine hit), the episodes are all under six minutes and follow Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) as he experiences everything from the beauty and wonder of a snow day to the tiresome nature of being a parent after he adopts an ugly bird (that’s also sort of cute). All five episodes are now streaming on Disney+.
