Will Lucas Have a New Romance on When Calls the Heart Season 12?
The When Calls the Heart Season 11 finale saw Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and Nathan (Kevin McGarry) finally admitting their feelings for each other — but what happened to Lucas (Chris McNally), who had been engaged to Elizabeth?
In an October 19 interview with Swooon, McNally, who is currently filming Season 12, teased there may be some “chemistry” in the upcoming season for Lucas. “Well, there is one of the new characters that’s coming to town who represents a fairly strong opposition to Lucas, and I think within that is a spark of chemistry, and we will see where that goes,” the actor explained.
McNally continued, “I’m not sure yet, but I also don’t want to spoil anything, but I think fans will be excited to meet this new individual and get to know them and follow that journey.”
Given McNally’s hint about his character having “chemistry” with a new person in town, it’s safe to say that Lucas and Elizabeth are officially over in Season 12.
While he couldn’t reveal too much, McNally did say there will be some “fun new characters” coming to Hope Valley. He also shared that When Calls the Heart Season 12 will “explore some areas that we haven’t had a chance to before in terms of these new characters but expanding on maybe some of the younger characters in Hope Valley that are now coming into adulthood.”
He added, “It presents an opportunity to kind of dive into that and unpack that a little bit.”

As for how his character feels about Elizabeth after how things shook out, McNally noted, “I think that Lucas has always maintained that Elizabeth’s happiness is paramount to him, so seeing her happy with Nathan, that gives him some solace.”
The actor added, “He’s happy for her, but it obviously still stings. But I don’t think in Lucas’ mind there’s any changing this course. It’s sort of the path has been set. He is coming to terms with it, and he’s at peace with it. Does he wish that it was a different path? Yes, but at the end of the day, he really cares for Elizabeth and wants her to be happy.”
In a March 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, McNally said Season 11 was too soon for a Lucas love interest, but noted that it’s a possibility in the future. “I think it would be too soon and I’m really happy that from a writing standpoint, we haven’t tried to shove that in and… explore it right now,” he said. “And in future seasons if there becomes someone else who maybe he’ll be even happier with… that’s great. But the time being, I really enjoyed this current trajectory.”
In a June 23, 2024 interview with TV Guide, When Calls the Heart showrunner Lindsay Sturman, was asked, “Is [Lucas] going to have room for love again or is that on the back-burner?” Sturman noted, “Let’s just say, love may be in Lucas’ future.”
