'I went without the bra': Alex Borstein goes without support to win Best Supporting Actress at the Emmys
Alex Borstein took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, stripping off part of her outfit and shimmying her way onto the stage, where she told her peers and the audience at home that she had opted to go braless. She also used the stage to encourage women to sit while they pee, to avoid splashing. “If you sit, we can all sit. Stop peeing on the seat,” she said. Hashtag true feminist.
According to Jessica Radloff, an editor for Glamour, the stripping down was her idea. She also tweeted, “FYI, that’s her wedding dress she wore to her now ex-husband, lol.” Borstein was married to actor Jackson Douglas (Douglas played Jackson, Sookie’s love interest on Gilmore Girls) from 1999 to 2014. “This was from 20 years ago,” the actress told Glamour on the red carpet. “The marriage didn’t last but the dress did and I wanted to give it new life so now it’s my Emmys dress. That’s the truth.”
It is Borstein’s first Emmy win; she was previously nominated for an Emmy in 2013 for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for an episode of Family Guy, where she voices matriarch Lois Griffin.
The actress was in a tough category, alongside fellow nominees Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) and Megan Mullally (Will & Grace).
In her acceptance speech, Borstein thanked Amazon and Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who won the Emmy award for both Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
