What's with the Jersey-boy Jonas Brothers' love for Penn State?
It’s no secret that the Jonas Brothers have an affinity for Penn State.
This weekend, Joe Jonas, one of the three members of the recently reunited boy band, cheered on the Nittany Lions during their home opener in Beaver Stadium Saturday against Idaho, where he was even sporting a Saquon Barkley T-shirt.
But Joe wasn't solely in town for the football game. The band's Happiness Tour had a show scheduled at Hershey Stadium Saturday night and has another performance at the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday. He did, however, remain on the sidelines through the first half of the game, and introduced the Blue Band’s halftime show.
From there, the Jonas Brothers made a stop at Penn State Children’s Hospital to visit patient Lily Jordan, who was supposed to be at the concert Saturday but was instead undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
Why do the Jonas Brothers love Penn State?
None of the brothers graduated from Penn State, so it has left some fans wondering where this PSU passion came from.
Back in March, Joe's affection for PSU started to gain attention when he tweeted out his support for Champs Downtown in Barstool's Best Bar competition and encouraged his fans to vote too. And nearly a month later, their association with Penn State really blew up when they made a surprise visit at the bar to debut the first live performance of their new song “Cool.”
But again — why?
It seems that the Jonas Brothers' connection to Penn State starts with their manager, Phil McIntyre, who is from State College. Back in August of 2010, McIntyre decided to take Joe out for his 21st birthday in State College following a show in Hershey, according to The Penn Stater Magazine. The energy and atmosphere of the school was just contagious.
Fast forward to 2017, and Nick and Joe were spotted at the Rose Bowl — tailgating at the bowl game, sporting Penn State gear — rooting for the Nittany Lions against University of Southern California.
Joe and his band DNCE returned to State College a month later to perform at THON 2017 with the Nittany Lion on stage.
Coach James Franklin has given the boys an open invitation to the games, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see the brothers pop up at some tailgates around Beaver Stadium in the future. And as far as the connection to PSU goes, this is what we got.
