Here's what the actress has been up to since the series wrapped in 1984, including what she has said about her late costars John Ritter and Suzanne Somers

Joyce DeWitt became a bonafide star with her role on Three's Company, and in recent years she's acted in theater and made cameos on TV.

The actress, 74, got her big break in 1977 when she booked the role of Janet Wood on the ABC sitcom alongside Suzanne Somers (who played Chrissy Snow) and John Ritter (Jack Tripper).

Despite Somers leaving the show in 1980, Wood stayed on the show as a main cast member throughout its eight-season run, which concluded in 1984.

Following Somers’ death in October 2023, Wood paid tribute to her former costar in a statement with a statement with PEOPLE.

“I’m sure Suzanne was greeted by Angels into the loving wisdom waiting for all of us on the other side, and I hope that will assist her family’s hearts in healing as they travel through this difficult time,” she said.

After the series finale of Three's Company in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves that same year, before taking a break from acting.

She later returned to acting in 1991 as she took a part in a production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. She made her return to the screen in 1995 as she appeared TV comedy film Spring Fling!.

In the years since, she made a handful of notable TV appearances, including Cybill, Living Single and Hope Island.

She has also continued working on the stage, with one of her most notable roles being the title role of Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre in New York City. Coincidentally, she took over the role from a fellow ‘70s sitcom actress, The Brady Bunch star Eve Plumb.

In 2018, she also played Mother Superior in a stage production of Nunsense at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in New Jersey.

What recent projects has Joyce DeWitt done?

In recent years, DeWitt has done a handful of feature films, including 2018’s The Savant and 2022’s Ask Me to Dance.

In June 2023, she starred in the Davisson Brothers Band’s music video for “Home.” The country music song pays tribute to the band’s West Virginia roots, which is also where DeWitt was born.

"The deepest part of my heart is anchored in my childhood years in West Virginia," DeWitt told Country Living about the music video. "I still have quite a large family of relatives there and returning there to visit is absolutely a shot of lifeblood, both to body and soul."

The video also features nods to DeWitt's successes since leaving West Virginia, including a throwback photo of her with her Three's Company costars Somers and Ritter.

What has Joyce DeWitt said about her Three's Company costars?

DeWitt has paid tribute to her time on Three's Company over the years. In 2003, she co-produced and hosted the TV film Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three's Company.

Following Ritter’s death in September 2003, DeWitt remembered the actor fondly in a statement to Closer Weekly. “John was a great friend, an extraordinarily talented actor and amazingly good at comedy,” she told the publication. “I miss the presence, I miss his smile, I miss the gift that he was.”

In 2012, DeWitt appeared on Somers' talk show, Suzanne Somers: Breaking Through, during which she and Somers reminisced about their time on Three's Company together. The appearance marked one of the first times the actresses had publicly interacted since their falling out 31 years prior over a salary dispute on Three's Company.

After four seasons of the series, Somers was fired from the show after demanding equal pay to John Ritter. ABC rejected her request for a pay raise from $30,000 to $150,000 per episode, according to Somers: “The show’s response was, ‘Who do you think you are?’ They said, ‘John Ritter is the star.’”

The professional discord also led to the end of DeWitt’s friendship with Somers for decades. During their appearance on Suzanne Somers: Breaking Through, they discussed the financial disagreement. “In a group of serious actors, I probably pissed you all off,” Somers said, and both women laughed. “If I did, I’m really sorry. I just really needed money at the time.”

When asked why she appeared on Somers' show, DeWitt replied, “It’s time. I think that you gave me the opportunity to make sure that I walk my talk for the last 30 odd years. Whenever something about Three’s Company comes up, I have relentlessly said that it is my opinion that the only reason Three’s Company is worth remembering is that it created an opportunity for all of us to laugh together, to celebrate joy.”

Following Somers’ death in October 2023, DeWitt released a heartfelt statement about the actress to PEOPLE, saying, “My heart goes out to Suzanne’s family ... they are a very close family — deeply connected and caring one to the other. I can only imagine how difficult this time is for all of them.”

She also reflected on Somers’ death, saying, “I’m sure Suzanne was greeted by Angels into the loving wisdom waiting for all of us on the other side, and I hope that will assist her family’s hearts in healing as they travel through this difficult time.”
