Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. From his early childhood to his national security clearance being revoked due to his alleged communist ties, the book is split into five parts focusing on different stages of Oppenheimer’s life.

Oppenheimer: Synopsis, Award Wins and Nominations
Directed by Christopher Nolan and based on the biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), an American scientist developing the atomic bomb for the U.S. government at the height of World War II during the early 1940s.

The movie also intertwines the story of the United States Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss (played by Robert Downey Jr.) secretly orchestrating a private hearing to strip the scientist of his national security clearance nearly a decade after the U.S. military dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, to end the war. Oppenheimer also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie and others.
Oppenheimer was nominated for 13 Oscars and won seven awards, including for best picture, best directing, best lead actor (Murphy), best supporting actor (Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), best original score (Ludwig G?ransson) and best film editing.
The film also won five Golden Globe awards in the drama category, including best motion picture, best directing, best lead actor for Murphy, best supporting actor for Downey Jr. and best motion picture score.
