Tennis may have singles and doubles, but Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers turned it into a three-person sport. The steamy sports drama about a love triangle performed modestly at the box office but blew up on social media, and fans who missed its theatrical run in April can now catch it at home on Prime Video. The film landed on MGM+ on July 29, but it can be streamed on Prime Video today.

The film’s Prime Video release comes as something of a surprise, as it was not initially on the list of movies and TV shows slated to land on the streamer in September. The film initially hit Prime Video to rent or buy in May.
Challengers stars Josh O’Connor as Patrick Zweig and Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, two friends who are vying for the professional and romantic attention of Zendaya’s Tashi Duncan, a rising tennis superstar.
“There’s a lot to see in this sports movie that’s given the hyperventilating Jules and Jim treatment: sex, tennis, racket abuse, weaponized stubble, the Stanford University campus, the resurrection of JKF Jr.’s famous ‘I Told Ya’ t-shirt, the most homoerotic churros in film history, more sex, more tennis,” David Fear wrote in Rolling Stone‘s Challengers movie review.
Continued Fear, “What you won’t witness is Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) breaking a sweat, even when this next-gen Serena Williams is decimating fellow players and seems to be moving at light speed — and that difference tells you everything you need to know about who is in charge.”
Following the film’s theatrical release, Rolling Stone caught up with O’Connor to talk about his Challengers role.
“Patrick might be in some ways the hardest challenge I’ve taken on,” O’Connor told CT Jones. “Because his qualities are qualities that I don’t necessarily recognize in myself — his bombastic, front-footed nature. Outwardly, he’s so sure of himself and so comfortable with himself. I was resistant to that [at] first.”
In addition to the film’s release on Prime Video, fans of the film can also pick up a physical copy on Blu-Ray or DVD. The film was released on physical formats in July.
Challengers (Blu-ray)
In addition to the film’s performances, Challengers was acclaimed for its sharp script, written by Justin Kuritzkes, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom’s cinematography, and Luca Guadagnino’s direction. The original soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross earned particular praise. The duo is best known for their soundtrack work with David Fincher and as the industrial rock duo Nine Inch Nails. The energetic, synth-heavy soundtrack is also finally getting a vinyl release, coming in November.

The Challengers soundtrack will be released on Nov 1 on a single LP 180-gram vinyl. The vinyl comes with extras like trading cards featuring the main characters and a “New Rochelle Challenger” bumper sticker.
