Whoopi Goldberg questions why President Trump appointed Mike Pence to lead coronavirus response: 'He's setting him up'
President Trump has tapped Vice President Mike Pence to lead the charge against a possible coronavirus outbreak in the United States, and Whoopi Goldberg has a lot to say about it.
The View moderator reacted to the news during Thursday’s “Hot Topics” roundtable and questioned Trump’s true motive behind the appointment.
“Whenever [Trump] wants to look like he’s doing something really good he will do something and then put somebody else in charge of it when he knows there’s a cliff coming,” said Goldberg.
She added, “I think he’s setting him up.”
Co-host Meghan McCain raised her own concerns about Pence’s qualifications to lead a public health-related initiative.
“Mike Pence has a really bad record when it comes to health records in Indiana. He actually hurt HIV patients because he halted needle exchanges and it really impacted HIV outbreaks in Indiana,” said McCain.
She continued, “I just think it’s really simple — someone with a medical and virus background should be in charge of a potentially deadly and lethal virus and medical outbreak in the United States of America. It doesn’t seem like that much of a leap for me. I’m not comfortable with him in charge.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also echoed McCain’s concerns in a press conference after Trump’s announcement.
Viewers took to Twitter to express their views on Pence’s new role, and some said they agree with Goldberg:
I’m with Whoopi. VP Pence is the perfect scape goat. Beware, no one should rely on information coming from the WH. Check other sources.

Another questioned why Pence is the one in charge:
@TheView Mike Pence?? Don't we have a surgeon general? Lol

But others said they feel they’re in good hands with the Vice President leading the charge:
Every one of these women just won't stop the negativity towards @realDonaldTrump. If the President cannot put the VP in charge of a crisis and get support from citizens, there is something wrong. I am positive that there are medical experts working alongside Pence. #ughtheview

@TheView. Way to go ladies. Let us instill fear into people. Whoopi is giving medical advice thinking she knows more than Pence, who is consulting with experts.
