Although we were keeping our hopes up, sadly, Britney Spears did not attend the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

This was the first time in over a decade that Spears received a nomination at the show, thanks to the new VMAs Most Iconic Performance category, which was introduced this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ceremony.

In the category, seven unforgettable performances from the last four decades were nominated, including Spears’s infamous 2003 performance of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood” with Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott.

This was, of course, the performance where Spears locked lips with Madonna and Madonna then kissed Aguilera as the trio completed their rendition of “Like a Virgin”—a moment that, today, doesn’t seem all that shocking, but was deemed quite so when it occurred in 2003.

Still, despite the recognition this year, Spears was not present at the show, and she actually hasn’t been back to the VMAs since 2016. Throughout the years, the Princess of Pop has often grabbed headlines whenever she did attend the ceremony though, whether she was locking lips, dancing with snakes, or making her triumphant return to the stage. At her appearance in 2016, she received the biggest award of the evening, the Video Vanguard Award, which celebrates a career of “outstanding contributions” to music videos.

These days, Spears doesn’t really attend award shows or make many red carpet appearances, and in the wake of a her divorce from Sam Asghari, the singer has been enjoying time away from the spotlight. Hopefully she’ll at least enjoy a few dances in her living room.
