Why Is Hoda Kotb Moving? ‘Today’ Host Dishes on New Suburban Home With Her 2 Daughters

Hoda Kotb announced she is moving and finally revealed some details about her new house! The Today host and her two daughters, Haley and Hope, are ready to call another place home.

Why Is Hoda Kotb Moving?

Hoda announced she was moving with her family during an episode of her “Making Space” podcast on March 27, 2024. Their new home is located in the New York City suburbs.

"I was thinking about moving. My kids and I are going to move somewhere to a new school, and I was reflecting on my life and how many times we moved when I was a kid," she said during a chat with author Arthur Brooks. "And I remember once my parents moved us to Nigeria, I was in fourth grade, I was horrified. Like, we get to this place, the language was different, everybody seemed different and it was hard. I moved again in sixth grade.”

"It’s so funny because the stories I tell now as an adult, are the stories of how I endured or what I did to cope,” she added. “Yet at the same time, as I’m preparing my kids, I feel like I’m trying to protect them from things that they should probably be into.”

Hoda further explained the reason behind her decision to move with her girls during an August 2o24 interview with People.

"I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, and play in the yard, and ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs," she said of moving. "I just see that life for them in this perfect house in this beautiful little town where I know they'll be able to blossom into beautiful, independent, strong women."

The NBC personality went on to say that she is in the "repotting phase" in her life, and was looking forward to it after celebrating her 60th birthday.

"It's like my roots need a bigger pot," she said. "You know when you take a plant out of a pot, and it's roots are all twisted and tight? And then you put it in a bigger pot with fresh new soil and it just grows bigger and stronger? That's the journey I'm on right now. And it's going to hurt a little, to leave that pot that was so comfortable for so long. But in the end, it's going to be exactly what we need."

Did Hoda Kotb Sell Her Old Home?

It was not immediately made clear if Hoda planned on selling either of her homes prior to the move. At the time of initially announcing her move, she owned a home on Long Island, as well as an apartment in New York City. However, a few months later, Hoda confirmed to People she was leaving her NYC apartment behind after returning home from covering the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"We haven’t officially moved in yet," she told the outlet. "I was away in Paris, and then just getting back and dealing with my birthday and other things, it's been on the back-burner. But we're almost there!"

In June 2024, Hoda got emotional on Today while talking about moving on from her old home.

“I literally was sitting at my desk this morning, where I sit every single morning — I light a candle, I have my journal, I do my stuff,” she said during an episode of the talk show. “And I thought to myself, this is the last Monday I’ll be sitting at this desk because we’re moving next week.”

Hoda also reflected on all of the memories made in the home that she raised her daughters in.

“I was thinking about it. Both Haley and Hope came home there and I remember them trying to crawl up the stairs, and I remember now how they race up and down," she recalled. "And I was thinking about the very first time we brought them home and carried them up those stairs in that car seat. And I was looking through old videos of them from when they were so little."

"I mean, it’s like you want to hold onto things and you want to let go," she added. "When I saw these videos of them when they were kids, little babies, I can’t believe I have a 7 and a 5-year-old, and I can't believe all those memories … There were so many things that we have built there.”

Inside Hoda Kotb’s Homes Before Moving

Hoda's homes have been showcased in photos on her Instagram numerous times through the years.

During the warmer months, the family loves spending time at their home outside of the city, lounging by the beach.

"The beach is our happy place," Hoda told People in August 2022. "They're into bubbles and swimming. They're into sand crabs and snails. They scoop them up and put them in buckets. They're into ice cream, sprinkles — all the summer things."

The Hope Is a Rainbow author previously lived with her ex-fiancé, Joel Schiffman. She publicly announced their breakup during an episode of Today in January 2022. After their split, they made it their mission to coparent their girls and make sure their childhoods are filled with love.

"He'll have a Saturday, and I'll do the Sunday,” Hoda said of her coparenting schedule with Joel. “We switch each week. He'll take the girls and do some fun things, and I'll take some quiet time. It's a healthy mix, and the kids love it. He's a great dad."

Joel was even on hand to celebrate Hoda's 60th birthday with an at-home party, which could be seen in a number of photos shared on Instagram.
