Why Mindy Kaling Gave Ben Affleck a 'Shout-Out' at the DNC
While the Democratic National Convention continues with its fourth day in Chicago, Ill. on Aug. 22, fans are sharing their thoughts on a small shout-out to Ben Affleck from Mindy Kaling as she talked about their home state of Massachusetts the night before.
On stage, Kaling hosted the third night of the DNC, speaking about Vice President Kamala Harris and joking about being named ambassador to Italy. But she also took a moment to call out Massachusetts, saying, "I couldn't leave here without giving a shout-out to the amazing delegation from my home state, Massachusetts."
"I love you, Massachusetts! Everyone is always hating on us, but they just don't get it. Go Sox! Go Jayson Tatum! Ben Affleck, hang in there!" she went on, before adding, "Dunkin Donuts is the best coffee in the world."
The comment about Affleck was in reference to his split from Jennifer Lopez, as the actress filed for divorce this week. Since then, Affleck has not shared a public response to the news.
Fans loved Kaling's casual humor, with replies on X like, "I love her bruh ??????," "Not hang in there ??," and "I know she didn't drag Ben Affleck's business into this? ??????."
"THE BENNAFFLECK COMMENT IT HASNT EVEN BEEN 2 DAYS ??????," joked someone else, while another fan said, "Best part of the DNC lol."
Of course, some people felt the reference was out of place at the DNC, such as those who wrote, "I love her but that was tacky... So unnecessary ??," and "not very demure or mindful."
Affleck and Lopez first dated and got engaged in the 2000s, but they never walked down the aisle and ended up married to different people. They eventually reconnected in 2021 and got married the next year. In 2024, rumors of issues and separation spread as the two were seen spending time apart, all leading up to Lopez filing for divorce in August.
