I am the biggest wimp ever when it comes to scary movies, and yet, for reasons I cannot explain, I adore the movie Twister. The 1996 classic is a hoot and a half, so you can bet I was thrilled, if a bit nervous, to see if the 2024 sequel, Twisters, could live up to the original’s high standard. Well, having now seen it not once, but twice in theaters, I can assure you it was everything I hoped it would be. I hooted; I hollered; I got choked up when I least expected it. And I’m ready to find a place for Twisters in my regular go-to movie collection—just as soon as someone can please, for the love of god, tell me where I can find Kate Carter’s tank tops.
Why the Original ‘Twister’ Is Still Worth a Watch

As someone who spends her summers alternating between dressing like Ellie Sattler from Jurassic Park and Armond Goldman from The Birdcage, you can bet that Kate’s uniform of comfortable, neutral-hued basics topped with an open button-up shirt fits right in with my hot-weather aesthetic. But it’s the tank tops in particular that have ignited a flame in my heart and driven me to the depths of Reddit in an effort to quell my curiosity.
Are they from Daisy Edgar Jones’s personal collection? Did she borrow them from Dr. Jo Harding, aka Helen Hunt, her fellow woman in STEM and tornado expert? Did costume designer Eunice Jera Lee make them from scratch because she, too, knows the eternal struggle of trying to find a tank top that can do it all?

Between Jones and Hunt, the women of the Twister cinematic universe really do have a knack for finding the perfect basics. There are two tanks in particular that I can't stop thinking about: the white ribbed tank Kate wears to the rodeo with Glen Powell’s Taylor Owens and the brown ribbed tank she dons to close out the dramatic final act of the movie. Both styles fit beautifully, and appear to be made of materials that hit that sweet spot between light and heavy—not so delicate as to look sheer, but not so heavy as to feel like a knit. The collars and sleeves have a wider trim, which feels more elegant than skimpier-cut tanks. And, best of all, they can be worn with a regular T-shirt bra. As Senior Editor and fellow Twisters fan Dana Dickey put it, “I was so impressed by those tanks. They were just what a tyro scientist with PTSD who is nonetheless intent on saving humanity would wear to do the job of storm wrangling while also looking cute for that new tornado chaser who just blew into town!”

My quest led me to find the extremely cool leather camera holster Kate sports through the second half of the film (Rose Anvil, $175), and to discover the fact that Kate’s red “Baseball Bombers” T-shirt is a direct reference to a shirt seen at the end of Twister. But so far the exact brand of her ribbed tank tops eludes me. Don’t fret, dear reader, I will continue to hunt for this most idyllic of all tank tops, and will report back with any hot tips ASAP. Because, after all, in the immortal words of Powell’s sexy tornado wrangler Taylor Owens, “If you feel it, chase it.”

GAP Modern Rib Halter Tank Top
This GAP tank top is my usual go-to and the closest I’ve come to finding a tank that checks all my boxes. The material is lightweight and breathable, but doesn’t appear sheer for lighter colors. And the length is great for both tucking into high-waist pants or skirts, or leaving untucked if you prefer. Plus, at just $25 a pop (with frequent sales to take advantage of), it doesn’t feel like I’m blowing my whole budget on basics.
Madewell Supima Rib Cutaway Tank
This tank comes highly recommended by multiple PureWow editors who swear by the super-soft material and bra-friendly fit. It coms in sizes XXS to 4X and, according to reviews, the top fits true to size. That said, if you want something a little looser, I suggest going up one size from your usual.
