Why ‘September’ played during the Colorado roll call at the DNC

DENVER (KDVR) — If you play back the state roll call at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, you may notice a new song played when each of the states is called.

All of these songs had a meaning for being chosen, with some choices being obvious like “Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas for the state of Kansas and “TEXAS HOLD EM'” by Beyonce for Texas.

From ‘Espresso’ to ‘Respect,’ the roll call songs used for each state at the DNC

For Colorado, the choice of the classic 1978 hit “September” by the band Earth, Wind & Fire may not seem clear unless you know your Colorado music history.

Why was ‘September’ chosen?

Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by Maurice White in Chicago in the 1960s. In the early 1970s, Philip James Bailey, Larry Dunn and Andrew Woolfolk all joined the band.

The three knew each other while studying at Denver’s East High School.

All three have since been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of Earth, Wind & Fire as well as the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

Famous bands and musicians from Colorado

“September” was not the only roll call song with a connection to the Centennial State. West Virginia’s chosen anthem was “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” by John Denver. Denver was born in New Mexico but had a very strong connection to Colorado, even changing his name in a nod to the Mile High City.

The musician had a home in Aspen where he lived until his death in 1997. The house was up for sale as of Aug. 21 for $8.49 million.
