Why Zendaya Skipped the 2024 Emmys

Zendaya is often one of the most anticipated stars to hit the red carpet, thanks to her superb looks crafted in collaboration with stylist Law Roach. Her presence was sorely missed tonight at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, however, where she failed to grace the carpet at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater.

While her absence naturally fueled collective disappointment, the Dune actor was unlikely to attend the Emmys in the first place, as she wasn’t nominated in any category this year. In fact, Zendaya—who has a total of two Emmy wins and five nominations—last attended the show in 2022, when she took home the titular award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Rue in HBO’s Euphoria.

Her win made Emmys history, with Zendaya becoming the first Black woman to win the Emmy twice in the category, and the youngest two-time winner of any Emmy in history. (She made history in 2020 as well, when she became the youngest person to win an Emmy at 24 years old.)

While Zendaya has been booked and busy this year with Dune: Part Two and Challengers, we may not see her in a television show until 2025. Though Euphoria was renewed for a third season in 2022, there’s been a significant delay in the show’s production due to Hollywood writers’ strikes, cast scheduling conflicts, and slowdowns from series director Sam Levinson, who insists on writing the entire show himself. A new Euphoria season won’t be out until at least halfway through 2025—so unless Zendaya has other television projects lined up, it may be a while before we see her at the Emmys.
