New ‘Wicked’ trailer has fans 'crying' in suspense for upcoming movie musical
A new trailer for “Wicked” is getting fans even more excited for the franchise's first part premiering in November.
The highly-anticipated film, which stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, is adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name.
The new trailer, which arrived Sept. 5, begins by showing Glinda announcing the news of the death of the Wicked Witch of the West to the residents of Oz.
"Let me tell you the whole story," Grande says in a voiceover as moments later, Erivo begins singing the musical’s powerful anthem “Defying Gravity.”
The clip, which comes nearly four months after the film's first trailer previous trailer featuring Grande singing "Popular," shows flashback scenes of Glinda and Elphaba forging a friendship after meeting at Shiz University.
Elphaba, who’s shunned by other students because she’s green, goes on to exhibit her immense magical powers, impressing even headmistress Madame Morrible, played by Michelle Yeoh.
"Listen to me, you can do anything," Glinda tells her friend.
The pair embark on a trip to Emerald City, where Elphaba senses trouble. The Wizard of Oz, played by Jeff Goldblum, offers strong words.
“The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy,” he says.
“I’m not afraid. It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me,” Elphaba vows shortly before the trailer ends.
Fans who watched the new trailer on YouTube responded with excitement — and some tears.
"I didn’t wanna cry… but here I am…. Crying," one wrote.
"I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry. And now here we are. Counting down the days until November," added another.
Several noted that around the 2:05 mark, the trailer's cleverly wove in music from the Wicked Witch of the West's theme in the 1939 Hollywood classic "The Wizard of Oz."
"The ending tune mixed with Margaret Hamilton’s witch theme oh wow," one observed.
The "Wicked" movie tells the story of Elphaba, “a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power,” according to a Universal press release about the film.
She's befriended by Glinda, “a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart," per the release.
Though the pair become friends, their lives go in different directions after they meet The Wizard of Oz.
“Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future,” the release said.
Like the Broadway musical, the “Wicked” movie was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.”
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang and Peter Dinklage.
"Wicked" hits theaters on Nov. 22, 2024, per a mention in the second movie trailer, with “Wicked Part Two” scheduled to arrive on Nov. 26, 2025.
Erivo and Grande have previously opened up about how they were filled with emotion when they learned they had been cast in the film.
“It’s been a really long journey here and I’m really grateful for it,” Erivo said in a video after she learned she had gotten the role of Elphaba.
“I never thought in my lifetime that I would get to be a part of something like this.”
Grande was equally in awe when she was told she had been tapped to play Glinda.
“Oh my God, thank you,” she told Chu while crying. “I love her so much. I’m going to take such good care of her. Thank you so much!”
