Wild Greg's new restaurant opens. Yes, there will be a mechanical bull.
Downtown Pensacola’s country nightclub Wild Greg's raised some eyebrows when announcing its downstairs expansion with a full restaurant menu last month. The restaurant is opening at 22 N. Palafox St. at the former location of the Cactus Cantina, which has relocated to the former Fin & Fork restaurant building on East Gregory Street.
Wild Greg's has long occupied the space above the eatery where it build up a reputation for offering a rowdy, good time. Now its working to expand that reputation to offering speedy, good food. Here's what the new space looks like and what’s on the menu:
What is on the Wild Greg’s menu?
Wild Greg’s Owner Greg Urban said that the new menu is intended to reflect the downstairs feel of the space, which caters to a more family-friendly crowd. You'll find a variety of comfort food classics prepared by head chef Leroy Hill, who joined Wild Greg’s after cooking for the Pensacola Beach Resort. The menu breaks down into main items, appetizers, sides and desserts. Urban is hoping to cater to downtown's weekend lunch crowd, as well as the late- night crowd, through a menu filled with foods that are “tasty, but quick.”
The restaurant opens at 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday and at 11 a.m. on weekends and is intended to be a complement to the existing nightclub. The restaurant portion of the business will give patrons a place to shoot pool and socialize before the club opens at 7 p.m., along with a place to grab a meal after the club closes at 3 a.m. They will also be offering delivery through third-party services such as UberEats and DoorDash.
You’ll find a variety of handheld sandwiches on the menu, including a Philly cheese steak, double or triple cheeseburgers, a spicy chicken sandwich and a meatball sub. It was important to Urban that the menu be affordable, with the average price for a menu item being about $9.80.
“We’re going to have one of the lower price points on the street, which I like,” Urban said.
What does the downstairs of Wild Greg’s look like?
The renovation also included two pool tables, televisions, a live entertainment stage and another mechanical bull. There is still a full bar including their signature mason jar cocktails.
The space carries over a similar Western theme, with rustic wood tones and barrel-tables. Urban plans to have a variety of country artists performing, ranging from local musicians to those out of Nashville, Tennessee, for late night shows as well as Saturday afternoon sets during the Palafox Market.
“That might be the most fun of the whole weekend,” Urban said of the Saturday afternoon show.
Here are few of the menu highlights:
Deep fried tacos ($12.95)
Taking it back to his roots in Minnesota, Urban wanted to offer a deep-fried taco on the menu. The tacos take a flour tortilla and fry it to give it the perfect crunch before being stuffed with ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes and mixed cheddar cheese. Served with sour cream and salsa for dipping.
Broadway dog ($8.95)
Inspired by the street vendors you’ll find after a night out on the infamous Broadway Street in Nashville, Tennessee, the Broadway dog comes loaded with peppers, onions, ketchup and mustard.
“There’s nothing better than a 3 a.m. hot dog outside Tootsie’s or Aldean’s (bar),” Urban said.
Pulled pork sandwich ($8.95)
While barbecue isn’t new to Pensacola, Hill’s homemade coleslaw sets the sandwich apart and makes it a must try.
Appetizer sampler ($16.95)
The appetizer sampler brings a variety of comfort foods, including potato skins, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers and fried pickles. This one is a must-order snack plate.
Fried Oreos ($7.95)
Fried Oreos are no longer restricted just for carnivals and are available anytime at Wild Greg’s. If you haven’t had one, think warm, ooey-gooey cookies and cream brownie.
