Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly dish on their comedy relationship: 'We have an open marriage'
Holmes & Watson is the third major collaboration between old friends and screen partners Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who previously joined forces for the comedy favorites Step Brothers and Talladega Nights.
The opportunity to reunite wasn’t the only reason they embarked on this comical take on the famous London detective Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell) and his trusty sidekick Dr. John Watson (Reilly). “It wasn’t just any old vehicle. Will and I were waiting for the right thing to do together. And I love Sherlock Holmes, I was a big fan of the stories already. But yes, getting to hang out with Will was already [a draw],” Reilly told Yahoo Entertainment at the film’s Los Angeles press day (watch above).
Other perks, according to Ferrell: “Getting to shoot in London. Period costumes. Waistcoats … Corsets. I do wear a corset to this day.”
It’s the third buddy duo movie of the year for Reilly (after The Sisters Brothers opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Stan & Ollie with Steve Coogan) — and the fourth if you count Ralph Breaks the Internet (with Sarah Silverman). So we needed to check in on how this makes Ferrell feel.
“At first, I’m livid,” he deadpanned. “Then I walk around the neighborhood. Then I’m like, ‘Come on, Will, calm down.’ And then I sit back and enjoy the work.”
And Ferrell has twice strayed from Reilly in recent years, filming the Daddy’s Home movies alongside Mark Wahlberg.
“We have an open marriage,” Reilly said (Ferrell seemed to agree), “Don’t judge.”
Editor’s note: Make sure you stick around to the end of the clip to see Reilly perform some emergency DIY handiwork when the set collapses.
