William H. Macy Called His Marriage to Felicity Huffman a 'Fairytale' Before Her Indictment

William H. Macy often spoke glowingly about his marriage to Felicity Huffman before his wife was charged for working on an alleged scheme to get their oldest daughter into college.

Federal court records unsealed Tuesday in Boston name Huffman, 56, as one of 50 people who have been indicted as part of the alleged nationwide scheme, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts. Authorities allege that Huffman conspired to pay $15,000 to an organization that facilitated cheating on her daughter’s SATs by having a proctor correct her answers.

Macy, 68, recently opened up about his 22-year romance with Huffman during an interview with Willie Geist on Sunday Today, calling their marriage a “fairytale.”

“Our marriage is a fairytale marriage,” he said. “I loved her the second I saw her.”

Macy and Huffman, 55, dated on-and-off for 15 years before finally tying the knot in 1997. The two share daughters Sofia Grace, 18, and Georgia Grace, 16.

And while the Shameless actor said being with someone who is also in the entertainment industry can be hard, it’s what bonded the couple in their early days of dating.

“We talk about showbiz a lot,” he said. “We give each other notes. It’s not something everyone should try. She can be tough, and I can be tough, too. We met in the theater and that’s really at the core of our relationship.”

He once again gushed about his wife at the 2019 Emmys Awards when he had a sweet answer to what keeps their marriage going after over two decades together.

“Marry her, it’s a piece of cake!” the actor quickly shared, earning a sweet kiss from Huffman.

According to an indictment obtained by PEOPLE from the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, Huffman has been charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Prosecutors allege that dozens of parents — including Huffman and fellow actress Lori Loughlin — paid sums to admissions consultant William Singer and his nonprofit organization, Key Worldwide Foundation (“KWF”). Then, prosecutors allege, the KWF would bribe coaches and administrators to accept the donors’ kids into prestigious college programs.

“Huffman and her spouse made a purported charitable contribution of $15,000 to KWF to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her oldest daughter,” the criminal complaint affidavit reads. “Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so.”

Huffman also discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with a cooperating witness, the indictment alleges.

A law enforcement source confirms to CNN that Huffman has been arrested in Los Angeles.

Reps for Huffman and Loughlin did not immediately return calls by PEOPLE for comment. She will appear in court on Tuesday.
