Wilmington provides backdrop in 'Saturday Night Live' sketch
It was something a little different than what usually runs on "Wilmington NC cable access" TV.
That's because this one was Live from New York.
The Port City got a shout out from "Saturday Night Live" on its latest episode, appearing in a sketch with a fictitious Brixby's Bar and Grill hosting in a sketch dubbed "Karaoke Recap."
It began showing a fake City of Wilmington seal with a TV announcer saying "You're watching Wilmington cable access. Up next is Karaoke Recap."
"Welcome to Karaoke Recap here at Brixby's Bar and Grill in Wilmington, North Carolina," said SNL actress Chloe Fineman, portraying a host of the show alongside longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson.
The sketch went on to have takes of stereotypical karaoke singers, from a "guy who must've chosen the wrong song, but wait a second," a couple acting like Homer and Marge Simpson from "The Simpsons" singing "Islands In The Stream" to guest host Simu Liu as "finance bro trying to get laid."
It's unknown why Wilmington was chosen to get mentioned, however, there is a connection between the Port City and Liu.

The star of the hit Marvel superhero film "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," has recently spent time in Wilmington filming “One True Loves," which is set for release in 2022.
By Sunday morning, the City of Wilmington Twitter also had fun with the sketch and "teased" it could squeeze karaoke into its programming.
So, should we add Karaoke Recap to our actual gov access channel? It would go nicely between the City Council replay and holiday safety PSA, don’t you think? https://t.co/4jPbFFv7Mh

Wilmington has had at least one of its own host the show: Michael Jordan in 1991.
