Yahoo readers sound off on Hallmark Channel lesbian kiss controversy

It was a rollercoaster of a weekend for fans of The Hallmark Channel after it came under fire for rejecting a series of commercials featuring a same-sex kiss, only to reverse its decision after critics called for a boycott.

The decision to pull the commercials came after a complaint from the conservative group One Million Moms, who claimed that the ads ran counter to Hallmark’s “safe for family viewing” content.

Zola, the wedding planning site that purchased the ad time, pulled future commercials from the channel, telling The Hollywood Reporter in part: “All kisses, couples and marriages are equal celebrations of love and we will no longer be advertising on Hallmark."

The backlash to the ban was swift, with many weighing in including comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who tweeted:

Hallmark also issued a statement after reversing its decision to pull the ads, saying in part “Hallmark is, and always has been, committed to diversity and inclusion – both in our workplace as well as the products and experiences we create. It is never Hallmark’s intention to be divisive or generate controversy.”
