‘Yellowstone’ Season 5B trailer teases the end of John Dutton’s story [Watch]

Only Taylor Sheridan knows how it ends, and he’s not telling. On Tuesday, the Paramount Network released a trailer for the second half of Season 5, which as of now is slated to be the final season of the megahit neo-Western series, though that is subject to change, as negotiations are reportedly ongoing to bring the series back for another season. “Yellowstone” executive producer Taylor Sheridan makes it up as he goes along, and the franchise changes rapidly based on what he decides to do. 

The trailer is a mix of new footage from Season 5B — highlights include Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) setting Jamie Dutton’s (Wes Bentley) vehicle on fire, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) becoming blood brothers, and Rip’s and Beth’s (Kelly Reilly) semi-adopted semi-son Carter (Finn Little) firing a rifle — with recycled footage from previous seasons. Kevin Costner is in the trailer as John Dutton, but the footage is presumably deleted scenes from prior seasons, as Costner has confirmed he will not be in Season 5B. Costner departed the series during the long break between halves of Season 5 (The Emmy-nominated series’ most recent new episode aired on January 1, 2023) over a contract dispute with the producers. It remains to be seen how Costner’s character will be written off the show.

Much of “Yellowstone’s” final run is shrouded in secrecy. The cast even got redacted scripts to protect the reveal of what happens to John Dutton. The fact that this first trailer is coming out less than a month before the premiere with all this old footage in it indicates that producers are A) trying to keep any spoilers from getting out and B) going to be working on this show up until the last minute. Paramount Network hasn’t even confirmed how many episodes Season 5B will have, which actually has become standard operating procedure for “Yellowstone.” It’s simply not like other shows. And whatever happens in the second half of Season 5 is going to be unbelievable.   

“Yellowstone” Season 5B premieres Sunday, Nov. 10 at 8/7c on Paramount Network, with an encore presentation at 10/9c on CBS.
