Yes, 'The Meg' is well aware of that other little shark movie 'Jaws'
Any time a new movie involving shark attacks hits theaters, there are immediate comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, Jaws. It happened to The Shallows. It happened to Deep Blue Sea. And now it’s happening to The Meg.
The new film, about a prehistoric shark called a Megalodon, opens wide in theaters this weekend, and director Jon Turteltaub is not shy when the subject of Jaws arises.
“I’ve been asked so many [questions about Jaws],” Turteltaub said during a visit to Yahoo Entertainment this week. “This is like a dream come true. But nobody is asking me good questions about Jaws.”
That didn’t deter us. We wanted to know whether the filmmaker included any homages to Jaws.
“There are Jaws references in this movie,” Turteltaub told us, declining to specifically name a particular scene. “Some are more obvious than others, and some are very personal to me. Some I worried, ‘Am I going to get in trouble for this?’ You can’t do a shark movie without someone going, ‘It’s like Jaws.'”

Turteltaub also suggested that Jaws, usually considered Hollywood’s first summer blockbuster, would be a wholly different movie if it were being made today.
“I think if Jaws were made now by [Steven Spielberg], it would be awesome now,” said Turteltaub. “But it would be different from Jaws from 1975. First of all, he’d be using CG. He wouldn’t have an animatronic shark. … I think he would pick up the pace for today’s audience and for his own sensibility today … it would certainly be a different movie, but I think it would just be a different version of awesome.”
