Ying Yang Twins, Twista and Paul Wall perform for Springfield's Juneteenth. What to know
Gillioz Theatre has announced a new concert that will be presented in conjunction with Springfield’s Juneteeth festivities.
The “Turnt Up Tour,” featuring the Ying Yang Twins, Twista and Paul Wall is performing at 7 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the Gillioz. Tickets are on sale for between $30 and $50 on the Gillioz website.
Who are the Ying Yang Twins?
The Ying Yang Twins are a hip-hop duo from Atlanta, made up of D-Roc (Deongelo Holmes) and Kaine (Eric Jackson). The duo is known for their collaborations with artists like Britney Spears on her album “In the Zone” and Lil Jon on his popular single “Get Low.” Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz also collaborated with the Ying Yang Twins on their most popular single, “Salt Shaker.”
The Ying Yang Twins released their first album, “Thug Walkin’” in 2000. They released five more studio albums throughout the early aughts and their most recent album, “One Night Only,” was released in 2023.
Despite the name, the two performers are not really twins.
Who is Twista?
Carl Terrell Mitchell, more commonly known as Twista, is known for his chopper style of rapping, a type of rapping that features fast-paced rhyming. The Chicago native is known for singles like “Slow Jamz” with Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.
In 1992, Twista was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the World’s Fastest Rapper, clocking 598 syllables in 55 seconds, according to the Chicago Tribune. Today, Eminem holds the record for Fastest Rapper, spitting 7.5 words per second.
Twista’s most recent album, “Category F5 (Instrumentals)” was released this year. The album features all instrumental singles from the rapper’s 2009 album of the same name.
Who is Paul Wall?
Originally from Georgetown, Texas, rapper and DJ Paul Wall is popularly known for singles "Johnny Dang" with DRODi and That Mexican OT, "Drive Slow" with Kanye West and GLC, and "Sittin' Sideways" with Big Pokey. For much of his career, Wall was associated with Swishahouse, an independent rap record label based in Houston, Texas.
Wall released his first album, "Chick Magnet" in 2004 and his latest album, "The Great Wall" was released in 2023. Wall's second album, "The Peoples Champ" was released in 2005 and debuted as No. 1 on the Billboard 200. "Sittin' Sideways," which was featured on the album, reached No. 34 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Chart and No. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Wall has also acted in several films, including "Furnace" in 2006, "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" in 2009 and "Ghetto Stories" in 2010.
