YouTube star Lilly Singh is taking Carson Daly's late-night spot
Lilly Singh stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday night to announce that she will be getting her very own NBC late-night talk show later this year.
The 30-year-old YouTube star currently has more than 14.5 million subscribers on her channel with nearly 3 billion views, so it’s no surprise that NBC has tapped her to take over the late night spot currently held by Carson Daly, who announced in February that, after 17 years, he would be leaving Last Call With Carson Daly.
During her announcement on Fallon, Singh also revealed that her show will be called A Little Late With Lilly Singh, will premiere sometime this fall and will include comedy segments and interviews similar to her YouTube channel. “I’m so excited, because I truly get to create a show from scratch,” Singh told Fallon. “You know, I get to make it inclusive. I get to create comedy segments and interview people and really create something that I believe in, and I’m so honored and humbled.” Singh also gave a shout out to the women before her, saying, “I couldn’t have done it without them paving the path.” Singh added, “But I do think it’s a little awesome for Indian-Canadian women also.”
Fallon then switched seats with Singh to let her feel what it would be like to sit behind a desk, should she choose to do so. Singh asked Fallon what advice he has for her as a host, to which he genuinely advised, “You can’t get sick. There’s so many people that depend on you, crew-wise. They have to feed their families but, also, the millions of people watching. They need to see you. So do not get sick, if you can control that in anyway.” Singh then joked, “NBC, is it too late for me to go back on this?” Fallon added, “I think my real advice is, and you already know this, that’s why you’re very successful, just be yourself. And you’re fantastic as you. Everyone can smell if you’re phony or not yourself. And don’t be somebody else, be you, and that’s why you’re great.”
To celebrate her announcement, Fallon then brought out a little surprise for Singh to help welcome her into the NBC late night family — fellow NBC late-night host Seth Meyers, who came out for a champagne toast with Singh as he stated, “Welcome to the family! How happy are we?” Congratulations, Lilly!
