The 'Buzz Kill' Caffeine Detector

Anyone who’s ever gotten a cup of caffeinated coffee when she had asked for decaf—and realized it when she was still wide-eyed at 3 a.m.—will appreciate this new brainchild from “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons. As she herself will tell you, it’s pretty brilliant.

And OK, yeah, it’s an invention not yet on the market, but rather something Simmons and the designers at New York City’s Tomorrow Lab came up with for her new FYI show, “The Feed.”

We’re not ones for frivolous kitchen gadgets—you know, the ones that are supposed to make your life easier, but actually make it worse—but The Buzz Kill, a funny-looking little gadget indeed, could be a powerful tool for those negatively affected by caffeine.  As Simmons says, “Everybody seems to have some sort of intolerance or allergy. I always used to hate those people, until I got pregnant and wasn’t able to drink caffeine anymore like I used to.” Enter: Buzz Kill.

The first episode of “The Feed” airs tomorrow at 10 p.m. EST, but the video above features an exclusive clip with Simmons’s product idea. What did co-hosts comedian Max Silvestri and chef Marcus Samuelsson enter into the competition? Watch and learn.

And who knows? Maybe we’ll be spending big bucks on Buzz Kills in 2015. Our own David Pogue might want to weigh in on this one.
