Cake of the Day: Love and Hearts Chocolate Cake Roll
Photo: Shumaila Chauhan
India-based Shumailia Chauhan, of The Novice Housewife, doesn’t produce cakes that look related to the word “novice” at all. As it turns out, since she shared her Swiss Black Forest Cake with us, Chauhan has decided to pursue a baking career. Huzzah!
Let’s celebrate with… What else? Cake.
For this one, you’ll need a steady hand and lots of patience. Chauhan printed out this heart pattern, placed it under see-through parchment paper, and then painted the design, tracing it onto the parchment with the guidance of the patterned sheet. Her ink? A mixture of flour, sugar, butter, and food coloring, which she then cooled in the fridge. Once set, she removed the parchment, put it on a sheet pan, spread chocolate cake batter evenly on top, and then baked it. Once done, she iced the sheetcake in malted chocolate frosting, sprinkled slivered almonds on top, and rolled it up, resulting in a tube-shaped cake with a pretty patterned exterior. Phew!
Check out Chauhan’s video tutorial to watch the process in action. And good luck! We are sure your dedication will be rewarded.
