Comfort Foods That Aren't Brown

It’s February. Those two words alone can strike fear into hearts, but there is a balm for winter’s bane: a bowl of something cheesy, cozy, and soul-satisfying. Welcome to Comfort Food Week!

We say “comfort food.” You say “fries, pasta, doughnuts, oatmeal, roast chicken, biscuits.”

What’s the thing they all have in common, other than being comforting? They’re brown (or something brown-adjacent on the color wheel, like yellow or beige). After a winter (or a breakup) of brown plate after brown plate, dinner can stop being comforting and start being depressing.

Cheer up! Here are some dishes that will cloak you like a warm blanket, but also keep your spirits high.

Raspberry Jam

Smear jam on anything and instantly add a pop of color: toast, biscuits, bagels. It’s like the lipstick of carbs.

Blueberry Pancakes

Granted, the majority of the pancake is beige, but the little orbs of blue bursting into oases of deep purple add interest.

Peas and Carrots

Remember how much you loved this dish as a kid? Or maybe you hated it, but that’s because it was steaming in your school cafeteria until each and every pea was pruny. This version stays vibrant and decidedly unmushy.

Tomato Soup

Warming, tart, creamy—definitely not brown.

Strawberry Ice Cream

Or orange sherbet. Or rainbow sherbet. Or basically any fruity ice cream or sorbet.

Guacamole

Bright green mash consisting of buttery avocados, a smidge of onion, jalapeño and lime, and loads of cilantro. Yay.

Carbs, check. Sugar, check. Cheery red color, bonus.
